On Questions Verses I Am Statements

The Nature of I Am Statements

It is true that the words “I Am” are most powerful, however, just as they can create vast possibilities, they can also be the cause of great limitations.

When we follow “I Am” with any of the specifics of our dense body, like, I Am a Man, a Woman, Asian, Caucasian, African, etc, we create divisions and separations between ourselves and all people outside our identity, which makes it very hard to see or comprehend the life and experiences of those we have now othered. We have made sympathetic compassion most difficult – evidenced in the degree of violence and killing still happening amongst different peoples. Compare this to “I Am Human,” and suddenly, men, women, intersex, and all nationalities – all people – are one with us, are all part of the one human family. Though this still others animals, plants, and the earth itself – resulting in the barbarism, atrocities, and destruction humans inflict upon them – such is the heart-nulling power of separation! A better concept is saying, “I Am Terran,” or some version of this – becoming at-oned with all life on earth.

Even worse than creating divisions at the earthly level, when we follow “I Am” with body-based identity labels, we create blocks to the knowledge and experience our Soular Self has gained in bodies that were different to our current one. And this is a great tragedy!

Expanding within, from bodies to qualities…
The same principle is true with non-body-based statements. Let’s consider this example: “I Am fearless and abundant.” Souls in human forms, through our various lives, develop great wisdom from experiencing and engaging fear and lack. We learn what things are by experiencing their opposites or what they are not. Without such experiences the Soul would not grow. To state we are fearless and abundant, just as with body-based statements, hinders or blocks our access to all we have previously learned from fear and lack. Hence, we are reduced as people when we use I Am Statements that inadvertently restrict access to any Soular Wisdom we have gained from such experiences and different bodies.

Exploring the Limitations

One approach to stop “I Am” from causing limitation, is to follow it with words that point to infinite abstract principles, like the famous, “I Am That” which points to all that is – a statement which aligns the smaller individual self as the All Self. However, while this is powerful and does not create limitations in and of itself, unless our intention is to “totally dissolve back into That Self,” it is near useless as a focus. In the immediate moment it can free us from the grip of our layers of limited identity, but afterwards, if we continue to focus on it, we also become seriously ungrounded and ineffectual, as we get swept into an “Everything is exactly as it should be” awareness – which is why the Great Bodhisattvas turn their backs on further personal development or Divine At-one-ment, and instead, focus on helping others.

When we focus on “all” in any way, it implies “anything is possible,” but, if we are intending to remain incarnate within a limited body on a limited world, both with their own defining qualities, we need to draw down from All Possibility, the specific possibilities of skills, powers, energies, or consciousness needed right now – those perfectly suited to our unique congruence of patterns within a bigger pattern, in time and space. The truth is that we can become stunned or frozen into utter inertia, leading to apathy, when confronted with every possible option before us – thus, becoming useless as servers in the world.

If on the other hand, we follow the words “I Am” with anything that is not a vast principle, we draw specific limitations around ourselves by excluding everything not contained within the added words. Hence, before we even focus on the situation we were seeking to change or create, our Personality awareness has doomed us to a fixed path and handicapped us with the limited resources available to the I Am focused upon.

As our Personalities have, in this life or a previous one, created the problems we seek to solve or grow beyond, it is best practice to avoid wherever possible, using I Am Statements that anchor and limit our awareness to our current body and qualities. Spiritual awakening lies in expanding our awareness to include our full Soular Consciousness, with its greater spectrum of experiences and wisdom. Therefore, we need to access this greater wisdom and to draw down from All Possibility, specifically what we need, without simultaneously creating limitations.
Hello Questions!

The Nature of Questions

A carefully constructed question is a way of focusing upon and drawing in exactly what we need, without also bringing limitation down upon ourselves. Why? Because questions open where statements close.

When we seek and construct a question, we are working from a mind open to receiving. But also, a mind focused on qualifying what it will receive – directly calibrating itself from all possibility to its current needs and focus, without closing the door to possibilities it hasn’t yet conceived of.

We are surrounded by answers and information, internally, within the collective consciousness or thought-o-sphere, and literally, blasted at and through us via radio, television, mobile phone, and internet waves. We are dwelling in a soup of omnipresent knowledge and knowing.

For a connection to be made, for the knowing to become ours, we must tune our receiver to the frequency of the broadcast we wish to acquire. This alignment is best engaged by tuning our questions to the specific answers we seek. The clarity of the power we receive – for knowledge is power – is directly proportional to the clarity of the questions we ask. Vague questions attract vague answers, general questions attract general answers, whereas precise or impeccable questions attract precise or impeccable answers.

Demonstrating the Difference

To make the difference between Statements and Questions much clearer, let’s look at an example.
We will write the statement and question in three different formats:

1. In their most basic forms. The I Am Statement will use the favoured formula of starting with “I Am” and ending with “now” – it is afterall, a statement intending something as “true now.” The Question will be kept Impersonal by using no reference to the limited smaller self, and, as some changes take time to create, rather than locking it to “now,” it will be left open.

2. With the amplifier words “even more,” which both affirm to the subconscious self that what follows is “already true” and is just being made more so and sets the tone for growth and change – a most powerful way of engaging with the subconscious. For if the focus is “not yet true in our experience,” these words cause the subconscious to amplify its efforts to make it so!

3. Linking the focus to our embodied life. True value or the usefulness of any focus comes when we shift our Being to Living, from an energetic pattern to embodied manifestation. What is the point of being beautiful and harmonious within, but living an ugly disharmonious life? Who would want this? Hence, we must shift our focus from Being to Living.

Here are the I Am Statements and Impersonal Questions, focused on the same key concepts:

  • I am expansive and soul-aligned now.
What is required to be expansive and soul-aligned?
  • I am even more expansive and soul-aligned now.
What is required to be even more expansive and soul-aligned?
  • I am living an even more expansive and soul-aligned life now.
What is required for an even more expansive and soul-aligned life?

Each statement is a proclamation, and each question is an opening to possibility and new action.
The statements are manifestations of raw individual will, and the questions open one to a direct collaboration with the creative forces of the universe.
The statements limit one to their own creative power and the forces they can consciously bend to their will, whereas the questions open the way to drawing on the magical extra energy underlying the principle, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

The Question is inherently more powerful because it is based in cooperation, and builds connection with Light Beings, whereas the Statement is less powerful because it is relying on the pattern of “power over” or competition, just as Dark Beings use! Of course, if the question we write is focused on “power over others,” selfish greed, pride, or anything that goes against Love-Wisdom or the natural Laws of Evolution, like trying to subvert Karma, then it will attract and open the way to collaboration with Dark Beings instead of their Light counterparts! The walker on the Light Path is ever mindful of their intentions and strives to align all they enact to The Greatest Good For All.

The primary difference between the I Am Statement and Impeccable Question is, one is an individualistic immovable wilfulness, prone to be dismissed as posturing and “I don’t care” by the inner realm Light Beings and likely our own subconscious self, and the other is an opening and invitation to collaborate and make change, which will draw in a more benevolent response.

The Impersonal Verses A Person

Where a statement like I Am ……….., implies a self, and one now carrying either reinforced limitations or possibilities too vast to manage, a well written question is impersonal, leaving space for the one creating to dwell in the greatest unlimited possibilities it is capable of holding and wielding, whilst simultaneously focusing on the precise needs of the immediate situation.

Also worthy of consideration is contemplating what a “person” actually is. What is this self, making I Am Statements, compared to the Not-Self at the seat of Impersonal Questions?

To say “I Am” implies you are a thing, an object that exists. If this is so, you are merely a portion or reflection of reality, you are finite, with limited resources. If, however, you stay focused on the “Question,” written without a reference to you as an entity, you remain an open function of the universe, with unlimited potentia and possibilities.

A Nuance of the Impersonal and Personal

Setting aside the I Am Statement, let us now consider the Impersonal Question and compare it to its Personalised version, as surely our Impersonal Question is “general” and would attract a “general answer that is true for all people,” as opposed to an answer that is specific to the unique needs of a particular person?

Here are two versions of the same fuller embodied question from our previous section. The first one is impersonal and the second is adapted to a personal format.

1. What is required for an even more expansive and soul-aligned life?

2. What do I require for an even more expansive and soul-aligned life?

The problem with the personal version is, it shifts the focus and orientation back inwards to the small self instead of upwards to the Soul and outwards to those who can genuinely respond. And as soon as we affirm an “I” self as present, we are affirming separation, and therefore, an immediate reduction in magical possibility! When we align our focus to the impersonal, it keeps the small self in check or in right measure, and it opens the way to the higher consciousness of Selflessness.

I realise these statements may feel discordant to anyone still identified with or as their personality self. But try, just for now, to put that identification aside and feel into the greater more abstract reality of your Soular Self and its at-one-ment within the Ocean of Oneness.

The truth is, we do not need to hold focus upon our incarnated personality self, as it already embodies a collection of patterns with their own vibrations, creating a unique energetic or vibrational fingerprint, and to this, all that exits beyond this small self, automatically responds. Regardless of affirming your person or not, your vibrational fingerprint guarantees that you will attract answers that are right for you, as all you broadcast is automatically attuned to or coloured by the unique note you embody.

A universal law worthy of acknowledgment at this point is the Law of Economy, which, in our current context, means the universe will not waste energy sending us answers that are of no use to us – in this we can trust. Therefore, we do not need to waste energy empowering the very personality which is in the way of our higher consciousness!

The Impersonal and its Link to Higher Consciousness

Comparing the Soul and the Personality…
The Soul is not a self as we experience ourselves here in dense reality. We live within the illusion of being separated independent individuals, whereas our Souls live as an interconnected interdependent oneness, just like all biological life on earth, but our Souls are fully conscious of their unified nature.

Human Souls incarnate as all sexes, all sexual orientations, all races, and in all fields of human experience, before they are fully evolved. They are also conscious of their own impermanence, though they appear immortal and eternal to the limited awareness of a human being. They know they are but waves within and upon an ocean of oneness. These truths mean that our Souls do not have a concrete individual identity, but are more impersonal transitory functions of the One Self.

Therefore, the more we strive to align with our Soular Selves, the more we experience this impersonal universality shared by Higher Consciousness. And, if we align our questions with the impersonal note of this higher state, we are actively setting aside the limitations of our personal identities in favour of the possibilities available to the Kingdom of Souls.

Engaging Desire in Creation

To create an I Am Statement requires finding and focusing on the subject of the statement, and to do this requires Seeking and Asking Questions. Even something as basic as, “What do I need to focus on right now?” We cannot arrive at I Am Statements until we have Asked Questions. Questions truly are the seat of our conscious navigation in life and especially on The Path.

Once we have our subject or topic of focus and if we choose to create an I Am Statement, as and after the statement is made, we must “feel” the focus as “true now.” This directs the focus of our awareness out of the mind and into the feelings. We must “desire” what we seek to create, to draw it down to the physical, but we do not want to lose conscious connection with our higher selves as the price of creating.

As most people are “feeling illiterate,” and do not understand the difference between their emotions and Love, let alone all seven feeling states, they drop not into their heart or higher feeling states, but into their solar plexus centre – the seat of the emotions – thus, cutting themselves off from any chance of using clear discernment, or an ongoing experience of and drawing from the power of their Soular Consciousness.

If, instead, we hold our focus on an Impersonal Question, we keep our consciousness not within our lower self at all, and actually, remain open to Soular connections and engagement with other benevolent beings – activating the power of the collective. We will still have to eventually bring our desire to bear and take physical actions, but with the Question we linger longer in higher realms, thus remaining open longer, to far greater insights, in quantity and or quality. As such, our eventual creations are the better for it.

Statements are Devoid of Action

We could say that making an I Am Statement is great, as it focuses us on positives rather than any negative limiting self-talk. While there is definitely value in this, something is missing!

After we have made our statement, we need to consider what specific actions will we take to change our experience of reality, other than the will-based statement. After we’ve affirmed our new reality, how will we know what to do in daily life to bring the new into being?
This is where an Impeccable Question trumps an I Am Statement every time!
The question aligns us directly to what we need, what actions we need to take, to shift our reality from the lacking state to the embodied and lived state.
Even I Am Statements lead to asking questions, so, why not simply start there.

Statements, Questions, and Lack

We all experience lack in many aspects of ourselves and our lives, and it is normal to want to change lack to abundance. How we choose to respond to the recognition of lack is essential.

The sad truth is that none of us would take the time to make an I Am Statement, unless we lacked the quality or experience we were affirming. For if we felt the need to simply reinforce an already existing quality within ourselves or experience in our life, we would be making a Gratitude Statement, thanking the quality or experience to strengthen it, not making an I Am Statement, trying to create it. In fact, if any quality is already well established within us, in right measure, it would essentially be beneath the threshold of our consciousness and we would simply use it as needed, without any thought upon it at all.

The same could, in some instances, be said of an Impersonal Question – that we wouldn’t be creating one unless we lacked the thing we were focusing on – but this is where the amplifier words “even more,” truly come into their own. When added to a well-written question, the outcome is like the love child of a Gratitude Statement and a forward moving Action of Co-Creation. The even more affirms and aligns our reality to already having the quality or experience, just as a gratitude statement does, however, it also opens the way to grow or amplify the desired focus “even more,” with the support of our inner self and allied Light Beings. It affirms and increases, with the greater collective power, the topic we are focused on.

To dive a little deeper…
We should definitely consider the Sponsoring Thoughts, or implied truths, behind the choice to make an I Am Statement or Impeccable Question. Are we only using these tools because we are experiencing a definite lack? Are we using I Am Statements when we should be using Gratitude Statements, or either type of statement when we truly need an Impersonal Impeccable Question? Any choice motivated by lack, runs the risk of reinforcing lack as true in our world and experience, for we wouldn’t make the choice without the lack – this is akin to a causality time loop.

Therefore, to avoid affirming and strengthening our experience of lack, we must work around it in clever ways. Think of the even more Impersonal Question as a Lack Hack.

Statements and the Subconscious Self

Our subconscious self represents 95% of our personality consciousness, so it is best to engage its support, rather than limiting it and ourselves to our conscious willpower alone. And remember, the usual behaviour of this deeper self is that it only hears the “topic of focus” and adds its energies to it. If we get our focus wrong or include any “I release (insert negative quality, behaviour, or experience) statements,” the subconscious will empower them all! It is better to utilise its power through questions inviting collaboration.

If, following our previous example, we affirm abundance with a True Now I Am Statement in an area we are currently experiencing definite lack – as we are told is the best way – the primary outcome will not be abundance, but deep inner torment and distress. Why?

When we “affirm a truth” that is not in alignment with our current reality or without acknowledgment of our current experience, we affirm inauthenticity. We create deep fractures and discord within us, and powerfully handicap ourselves through our subconscious self seeing the affirmation as a lie and denial. We are denying or belittling our previous creation, which was the best we could do at the time. Our subconscious or deeper self, who helped bring it into reality, now feels this as judgment, rejection, and betrayal. The byproduct is our resources and creative abilities then become even more limited, and we also create two conflicting beliefs and an inner war.

Due to this newly empowered tumultuous inner condition, when the new abundance doesn’t come quickly, it is common to increase the frequency of our affirmation statements or try and increase their power, but then, the subconscious feels like it is being yelled at. Under these conditions it will behave like an adversary rather than an ally in co-creation and you may find yourself unconsciously sabotaging your efforts to create abundance.

Therefore, True Now I Am Statements run the risk of creating the very opposite of what they intend, through denial of the current reality and the resultant amplified inner conflict and inauthenticity – and what genuine Light Being would choose to cooperate and co-create with an inauthentic person?

Transforming I Am Statements into Mantras

True Now I Am Statements are not all bad and may still have a place in our toolkit of personal transformation, once we know precisely and for certain what specific qualities we seek to draw into or awaken within ourselves – and once we are certain they will not create inadvertent limitations. Or we can transform them into open statements, utilising the power of greater collective creation, in the form of Invoking Mantras or Prayers.

The science of invocation is too complex to go into in this already lengthy article, though I have covered aspects of it in my article called, “The Art of Mantras – A Greater Invocation.” (See link at the end.)

For our current purpose, here is an impersonal invoking mantra version of our “expansive and soul-aligned” Statements and Questions:

Mantra of Expansion and Soul Alignment

Guardians and Masters,
of Power, Love, and Light.
Come, be present now,
bring your wisdom, wit, and might.

Support here, expansion,
and person-soul alignment now.
Reveal clearly, each pristine step,
And fully reveal each how.

Guardians and Masters,
Gratitude and Love to you.
Through this expansion and alignment,
Greater Service starts now true.

So now it be!
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

For this invocation to have real value, you do need to have a clear idea of “who” it is addressing – exactly to whom the title of “Guardians and Masters” is pointing – but I include the mantra in way of example.

Finishing the I Am
  • “I Am” cuts us off from everything discluded by the words that follow it, while focusing on a Clear Question keeps us in the flowing grace of qualified possibility.
  • An Impersonal Question is more aligned to open Love and community, whereas an I Am Statement is more aligned to separative Will or brute force.
  • Statements are like shouting at our subconscious self, whereas Questions are an invitation to co-create.
  • All statements within the mind can only be regurgitations of what is already known – the past.
Seeking questions aligns us to our future!
Seeking questions opens us to all possibility, whilst maintaining conscious navigation.

One final analogy or co-measurement for revealing clarity…
In a Statement we are formed and fixed, a Particle.
In a Question we are unformed and free, a Wave.
A Particle is locked as it is.
A Wave is free to be anything.

While a particle may be inert or in action, a wave, by its very nature, is always in dynamic flowing action. Therefore, if we are seeking change, seek the dynamic wave state of an Impersonal Question – for this engages flow.

Tools For Transformation

Whether we are writing I Am Statements or Seeking Questions, we are consciously engaging our growth and the creation of our lives, and this is good practice, as it interrupts or disrupts the chatty lower mind. In fact, asking questions, either to inform our writing of I Am Statements or through directly Seeking Impersonal Impeccable Questions, temporarily stops the narratives running within our mind.

These background narratives or stories we tell about ourselves, our circumstances, or our lives in general, are what keeps us stuck right where we are in life. If we want change, we need to interrupt the narratives.

If you now wish to engage with Seeking Questions but you don’t know where to start, ask, “What is my current question?” Seek this, look for it, the act of seeking this puts the mind into an open state – the opposite state to making statements, pronouncements, and judgments – its usual pattern that closes us off to true insights.

You might say that you do not know what your current question is, but this is just the mind’s way of staying in the known, in the past, in comfort. There is always a question – keep looking for it.

If, after a while, nothing comes to you, try asking, “What is it I most want to know?”
And then, “How can I word a question about that?”
If you’re still unsure, sit with this alternative angle, “What do I Not know?”

If you still have nothing come to mind, do not be concerned. This practice is new to most folks, and it can take a little time to fully engage. Stillness and quietude, patience and persistence, will eventually open the way for you. You may also find that this practice creates uncomfortable feelings. To this I would say, “Notice how unfamiliar it is to sit with questions seeking questions. How not comfortable it is. How usual is disrupted by unusual. Good!”

If you would like a little help, see the second article linked at the end, “On the Art of Seeking Questions.”

Let us all embrace Waves of Being, with Wisdom.

PS: As always… I suggest direct investigation and testing all I have offered – for yourself. Therefore, I invite you to experiment with Impersonal Questions and see if this approach proves powerful and useful for you. If not, discard the practice. Direct experience is always our best guide. Though do note, that just because something does not work for you right now, does not mean it is not true and genuinely useful. It may mean you are not yet ready for it, but it will work brilliantly for your future self – next week, month, year, or life.
